![]() This map shows the area covered by North Warrandyte CFA. Neighbouring brigades are often called to respond to incidents in this area and we can be called upon to respond to larger incidents in surrounding areas. Our support unit has been to calls as far away as Healsville and Cottles Bridge. The brigade area of approximately 10 square kilometers has about 90% tree cover on steep to very steep hills with a high degree of development scattered throughout old and, in many cases, inappropriate subdivisions. Two major roads provide good general accessibility to Research, Kangaroo Ground and Warrandyte. Most of the minor roads lead into network areas with winding, unmade single width tracks and either poor or no egress at all. The bridge which crosses the Yarra between Warrandyte and North Warrandye has become a hazard during major fires as residents attempt to leave at the last minute and fire fighting vehicles attempt to enter the area. It is important that residents make a decision to either stay on days of high fire danger or leave the area early in the day. Last minute rushes from the area can be fatal.
